His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known by his penname Mark Twain. He is a famous American author. He was born in Florida, Missouri. When he was four, his family moved to a small village near the Mississippi River in Missouri. Nature and his life near the Mississippi River provided him with lots of inspiration on the works that he wrote. It especially provided the setting for Tom Sawyer. In 1847, his father, who was a lawyer, died, and his family faced some financial difficulties. He gave up his studies and started to work. For a time, he worked as a boat pilot on the Mississippi River. After that, he contributed both articles and humorous sketches to several newspapers. He started to use the penname Mark Twain, which referred to a water level that was as deep as the height of two adults. His work The Innocent Abroad, published in 1869, became a big hit, and he then became a full-time writer. His 1876 work The Adventures of Tom Sawyer became a bestseller, and his 1885 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn made him a great figure in literature. Mark Twain is the most beloved storyteller in the United States. His humorous stories have fascinated many readers. In addition to the works already mentioned, he also wrote the works Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, and The Prince and the Pauper.
