출판사 서평 Arirang of Korea Han, Sorrows and Hope 이 책은 원로 지리학자 이정면 유타대 교수가 유네스코 인류무형문화유산인 '아리랑'을 해외에 널리 알리기 위해, 남한은 물론 북한과 중앙아시아 등 아리랑과 관련된 곳을 직접 탐사하고 나서 영문으로 쓴 것이다. 2009년 영문판 'Arirang, song of Korea'(이지출판사)를 출간했을 때 유엔 주재 북한대표부 박송일 참사로부터 북한의 아리랑에 대해서도 써달라는 부탁과 함께 초청을 받았다. 이정면 교수는 2011년 10월 평양을 방문, 북한의 아리랑... Arirang of Korea Han, Sorrows and Hope 이 책은 원로 지리학자 이정면 유타대 교수가 유네스코 인류무형문화유산인 '아리랑'을 해외에 널리 알리기 위해, 남한은 물론 북한과 중앙아시아 등 아리랑과 관련된 곳을 직접 탐사하고 나서 영문으로 쓴 것이다. 2009년 영문판 'Arirang, song of Korea'(이지출판사)를 출간했을 때 유엔 주재 북한대표부 박송일 참사로부터 북한의 아리랑에 대해서도 써달라는 부탁과 함께 초청을 받았다. 이정면 교수는 2011년 10월 평양을 방문, 북한의 아리랑 연구자들을 만나 아리랑에 관해 토론을 했으며 아리랑 매스게임을 관람하고 자료를 수집하는 한편, 아리랑이 남북통일의 문을 여는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것이라는 확신과 함께 남북한의 아리랑을 소개하는 책을 꼭 써내야겠다는 소명의식을 느꼈다고 한다. 따라서 이 책은 남한의 서울/경기, 정선, 밀양, 진도, 북한의 해주, 단천, 고성, 서도(평안도) 등지에서 불려온 아리랑의 내력과 악보를 담고 있으며, 중앙아시아 키르기스스탄과 우즈베키스탄에 살고 있는 고려인들의 아리랑 이야기와 이미 해외에서 불리고 있는 아리랑 이야기, 그리고 아리랑학과 아리랑의 미래에 대한 저자의 의견을 곁들였다. 또한 부제를 '한(恨), 슬픔, 희망'으로 달았는데, 슬픔과 희망은 그에 해당하는 영어 단어로 대체했지만 ‘한’은 적절한 단어를 찾을 수 없어 그냥 우리말 발음으로 표기했다. 이 교수는 \"우리 역사에서 '한'을 빼놓으면 무엇이 남겠습니까. 한이야말로 우리 민족의 상징이나 다름없어요. 그러나 아리랑은 한에 갇히거나 슬픔에 억눌리지 않고 벌떡 일어나 전진하는 의미를 담고 있습니다\" 라며 세계인이 우리 아리랑을 부르며 그 속에 담긴 ‘한’의 의미를 이해할 수 있기를 바란다고 했다. 이 교수에게는 또 다른 목표가 있다. 남북한 아리랑 연구자들이 모여 이른바 '아리랑학'을 창립하는 것이다. 방북 때 \"남북 공동 심포지엄을 열어 아리랑을 체계적으로 연구해 보자\"고 제안하자 사회과학원의 문성엽 교수와 공명성 민속연구소장, 윤수동 조선민족음악무용연구소장이 \"언제 어디서든 가능하다\"며 찬동했다고 한다. 광주 출신인 이 교수는 서울대 지리교육과를 졸업한 뒤 1960년 미국 미시간대에 유학, 토지이용계획과 인구론 등을 전공해 문화지리학 박사학위를 받았다. 그후 경희대, 말레이시아 말레이대, 미국 로스앤젤레스 캘리포니아주립대(UCLA)를 거쳐 1972년부터 유타대에 재직하고 있다. 또한 특기할 만한 일은 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재와 때를 맞추어 출간된 Arirang of Korea : Han, Sorrows and Hope(이지츌판사) 책과 함께 서도 명창 유지숙의 ≪아리랑의 재발견≫(신나라레코드) CD를 신나라 레코드사 김기순 회장과 이지출판사 서용순 대표, 유지숙 서도명창이 공동으로 전 해외공관 및 주한 외국 대사관에 무상으로 제공할 예정이다.
