Carlo Collodi was an Italian writer of children’s works. He is better known by his penname Carlo Collodi, but his real name was Carlo Lorenzini. His penname Collodi came from the place where he was born and gave him a lot of inspiration in his writing. He is only known as a writer of The Adventures of Pinocchio, but he also served as a volunteer with the Tuscan army during the Wars of Independence in Italy. He was also interested in politics and became one of the founders of the satirical newspaper Il Lampione. His active interest in political matters can be seen in his earliest works. He won fame with his 1856 novel In Vapore. He also created satirical sketches and stories in those days. In 1875, he entered the domain of children’s literature. He became fascinated by the idea of using amiable and rascally characters as a means of expressing his own convictions through allegory. In 1889, The Adventure of Pinocchio was published weekly in a newspaper for children, and it was also published as a book in 1883. It gained tremendous popularity in Italy. He also wrote other children’s books, such as Giannettino and Minuzzolo. He died in Florence in 1890. After his death, The Adventure of Pinocchio gained worldwide fame and popularity. Later, the Carlo Collodi National Foundation was built to encourage education and to promote his works.
