Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father was a famous eye doctor, and his mother was a poet. Wilde studied at Trinity College and Oxford. In 1881, he started working as a writer by publishing a selection of his poems. He later published his fairy tale of The Happy Prince in 1888. This fairy tale was written for his two sons, who were born after he got married in 1884. This great work was full of satires on the society at that time. After that, he published the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, the plays Salome, A Woman of No Importance, and An Ideal Husband. Those works led him to the peak of his success as a writer. But Wilde was imprisoned in 1895 when his intimate association with Alfred Douglas led to him being put on trial for the charge of homosexuality. After his release in 1897, he moved to Paris, France, and lived in penury. Wilde died on November 30, 1900, penniless, in a cheap Paris hotel at the age of 46. Oscar Wilde was called an “unfortunate genius who wasn’t accepted in his time” and a “social heretic.” He denied the solemnity and hypocrisy of the days in Victorian period, and he bitterly satirized them. This caused him to be abandoned by his country. One hundred years after his death, people now appreciate his work.
